Our first year in Vermont, and weather records are being broken

We are seeing lots of places where the flooding is even worse than it was in 2011 with Irene, and lots of locals didn’t think they would see another event like that in their lifetime. But here we are.

The antique store where we have a booth is in Chester, and I went there today. The area behind the store was flooded badly, although the waters have receded. This was the baseball field behind the store.

The road leading to the Stone House Antique Center was temporarily closed, at least for traffic from our direction, while the river rose so high it covered hundreds of yards of the highway. By this afternoon, the water had receded enough that I was able to get to the store.

This was just down the street from the store. There is still water over the road, and one whole lane of the road has been washed out.

While Kelly and I were shopping for a house in the area, we paid attention to houses that were in flood zones. Thank God we did because we might be underwater or flooded out now. We know for a fact that some places we looked like Saxton’s River and Chester were flooded badly. Can you imagine being in a house a year and then this happens? I can’t imagine that.

That video is from North Walpole, New Hampshire, right across the river from our village of Bellows Falls. The Connecticut River is normally pretty calm and nothing like this. I can’t imagine that anyone caught in that could be rescued easily.

We are still checking on all our Vermont friends and neighbors to make sure everyone is doing OK. That may take some time.

Be well, everyone!
