Wow.
The new cover of Sports Illustrated talks about this amazing World Series win and features Big Papi and the three Boston police officers from some of the most iconic photos on the day of the Boston Marathon bombing. Those same three officers had been on a previous cover shortly after the bombing.
I think it would be safe to say 2013 has not been a great year for a lot of people, and for Kelly and me and all of the other people who are still struggling to find full-time work and pay bills, the Marathon bombing was a stunning event from a universe that just seemed to pile on even more when we were down. We were lucky to be half a mile away or so. The people near the finish line, especially all of those people with terrible injuries, as well as those who died, obviously have had so much more to deal with. And I guess that is why the World Series win means so much more to everyone in the city than it would under normal circumstances. To have come so far, from a bitterly divided team with a horrible record, and then a city that was reeling from the bombings and all of the events that followed, to win the World Series in rather dramatic fashion, it just feels like maybe things will get better. At least, that is what I am hoping. And the ability to hope may not seem like much, but believe me, going from not having any hope in things getting better to a hope that maybe, just maybe, they may get better after all, is a pretty tremendous change.
So again, congratulations, Boston. We love you. You mean the world to us.
