July and August Concerts

I just got this email today from Matthew Hall and so I thought I’d pass it along to the rest of you.  There are three concerts he’s involved with, starting tonight, that help wrap up SoHIP.

I warmly invite you to attend one of this week’s performances of sacred music of Henry Purcell and his contemporaries Matthew Locke and John Blow.  The music is ravishing: we will perform some of the better-known gems including Purcell’s O dive Custos and The Blessed Virgin’s Expostulation, as well as some recently rediscovered pieces including Purcell’s full anthem I was glad and Locke’s graduation ode Descende caelo.  It has been a real pleasure to work with my collaborators in preparing this program.  I hope you will come and share it with us.

Dates and venues are:

320 Boston Post Rd.

Whitehall Project –
I Was Glad: Music of the English Chapel Royal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Join us for the final concert of the 26th annual SoHIP Summer Concert Series!
July 31 – August 2
I Was Glad: Music of the English Chapel Royal
The year 2012 marks the 325th anniversary of Sir Christopher Wren’s Chapel Royal at Whitehall Palace. The aesthetics of the English Restoration, formed by the tastes of an exiled king and his court as they traveled Europe, are delightfully international. English editions of continental music, especially that of Carissimi and Lully, abound from this period, leaving clear influences on the island’s native repertoire. This program surveys the sacred music of Whitehall through the organ music and anthems of Purcell, his teachers, and his contemporaries.
Claire Raphaelson (soprano), Julia Cavallaro (mezzo-soprano), Gerrod Pagenkopf (countertenor), Michael Barrett (tenor), Will Prapestis (bass), Matthew Hall (organ), Catherine Liddell (theorbo), Karen Burciaga (violin), Emily Dahl (violin), Emily Davidson (bass violin)
We hope to see you there!
I can’t go this time around but I’m hoping that some of you can.  The concerts should be excellent.
