Today is the last day to register to vote for Senate primary set for April 30

Today is the last day to register to vote for the April 30 party primaries that will choose the Republican and Democratic candidates for the US Senate seat.

Most city and town offices will be open until 8 p.m. tonight to allow eligible voters to register in person, Secretary of State William F. Galvin said today.

It is also possible to register by mail, though it will be rejected if the letter is postmarked after today’s date. Galvin recommends bringing the registration, which can be printed from his website, to the post office directly. That way, it’s sure to be postmarked with today’s date, he said.

The winners of either party primary will then face off in the special election to fill the US Senate seat vacated by now-Secretary of State John F. Kerry. The final election will be held June 25.

Voters wishing to switch their enrollment in a political party, or those who want to register as a member of a political party, must also do so by today. Registered party members can only vote in party primaries, though people who choose to register as an unenrolled voter can vote in either primary.

New citizens, people who will be 18 years old on or before April 30, or those who have moved in the last six months, are all eligible to register to vote.

Galvin said he’s not anticipating a great wave of new registrants given the last general election saw such a high voter turnout. According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, Massachusetts was one of the top five states for voter turnout in 2012, with 66.6 percent of eligible citizens voting.

“Today, we’ll see some [newly registered voters] but not a lot,” Galvin said. “Interest is just starting to build in this election.”
