Your cry for the day

If you haven’t had a good cry lately, here it is.  I’m proud that this story happened in my home state and that the individuals involved did what they did out of love and compassion for both the animal and the officer involved.

Rest in Peace, Kaiser.

Another historic mystery may soon be solved

At least, I hope so.

For some 75 years or so people have wondered what happened to Amelia Earhart.  There have been all sorts of theories about what happened to her and Fred Noonan, but many of them were based on secondhand information, old recollections. or weird conspiracy theories.  Now we have some possible archaeological evidence near the island of Nikumaroro.  Over the years there have been a variety of clues that indicated a possible landing of the aircraft near this island.  Now, these clues are circumstantial, but the cumulative effects seems to have been to encourage further development of the sites near the island.  Last year a team thought they may have found landing gear from her aircraft.  And now a recent analysis of a sonar scan  may indicate the possible location of an aircraft in the area where they have been looking for it.

It would be great if we were finally able to solve this open-ended question of history, not to mention put to rest some of the more absurd theories about what happened.

Just popping in to share this

From a friend elseweb:

“Michelle Bachmann is not going to run again! She announced very very early
this morning that this would be her last campaign. She’s facing ethical
concerns, plus the commute back and forth to her planet is a real killer.

That flat, nasal, uninflected serial killer voice will be gone! W00t!“

This absolutely made my day.

Geoff and I are dealing with a LOT of paperwork and details and bureaucracy right now.  We found yet another crack in the system, when we fell into it, naturally, so we’re trying to climb out of it.  More on that later.  Till then, just rejoice with MN.

A rare event, indeed

It’s not often I get to talk about three of my favorite subjects in a single post: cetaceans; 19th century technology; and maritime archaeology.  But it seems an exceedingly rare Howell torpedo has been found off the coast of Coronado, California – by dolphins trained by the U.S. Navy.

Honestly, this is amazing.  There was only one of these that was known to exist, and now another has been found in the ocean… by dolphins.  It just boggles the mind.  It makes me wonder if anyone has ever tried using dolphins to deliberately search for shipwrecks.

Work without ceasing

This is a passage from 1 Thessalonians I’ve always liked. (NSRV).  I’ve tweaked it a little to reflect our current circumstances.

Rejoice always, 17 pray work without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit.

What NOT to say when you’re at a craft show

I’ve done 4 shows in the last two weeks.  It’s been tiring but fun.  I met some really fun and really talented crafters, especially at Cambridge Open Studios.  (COS is, by the way, also showing this weekend.  Yes, you should go if you can.  It’s amazing.)

What was striking was not only how great the community of crafters were to each other, but also how great most of the people visiting the show were to us.  However, like any barrel of apples, there were a few rotten ones.

Everything listed below was actually said to me or one of the people I met over the last two weekends.  When you’re at a craft show, don’t be this person.

It’s good to laugh to keep from crying…

and honestly, I don’t remember the last time I laughed so often and so hard at anything, much less at a subject that has hit Kelly and I personally so very, very hard.  And the economy has definitely hit Kelly and I quite hard in the past few years.

Thank you, Stephen Colbert.
