Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. — Marie Curie

A night at the Symphony

Last night we were fortunate enough to get tickets to the BSO, thanks to friends who gave us their tickets.  The performance featured music by Felix Mendelssohn, a 19th century composer who died young but still managed to accomplish much.  He is of course most famous for his wedding march but he also wrote operas, symphonies, piano quartets, and other pieces.

We had to rush a bit because of Kelly getting held up at work but we made up for lost time and even managed to find an awesome parking spot right around the corner from the Hall.  We got inside with a little bit of time to spare and so we looked around for Jen and Greg (the couple who gave us the tickets) and found them almost by accident.  After briefly talking with them (and with another couple Kelly knew) we headed up to our seats.

Music from the court of Frederick the Great, Jan. 28-29‏

My friend, Matthew Hall, sends word of more performances by Musical Offering.  Details are below.  I hope that local Boston area folks can make it.

Yet another spring day… in January… in BOSTON

The weather is seriously messed up.  This is just nuts.  The temperature got up to at least the mid-50s today.  I wore a t-shirt with a light jacket over it while I was out, and I actually had to take the jacket off because I was getting too warm.  This is like an Alabama winter.   It is not remotely normal.

Finally, some real winter

Yesterday we finally had a winter weather event worthy of the name.  We did not get as much snow as some other places (the South Coast got 9 or 10 inches in some  areas), but we got a few inches, enough for me to try out the electric snowblower we got as a wedding gift.  I was not sure how well it would work, but wow, it works.  I managed to clear our walk and part of our neighbors’ in no time at all.  Just wait until our next blizzard.  I am going to go nuts with that thing.

Much to my surprise, when given the opportunity to go outside and do their business in the snow, Rerun and Thumbelina both chose to go out into the (at that time) uncleared snow, while it was still coming down, and go potty.

Miracles never cease.

On Football

It’s no secret if you know me and Geoff that I’m the bigger football fan in this family.  While we’re both Red Sox fans, I’ll generally sit and watch a football game on TV with more interest than I will a baseball game.  I enjoy a baseball game live much more than on the TV while I will happily watch football either way.  I am also far more likely to talk football smack with friends and coworkers than Geoff is.  Unless of course you’re a Yankee fan, then all bets are off.

It took a while, but winter may finally be here

When I got up this morning,it was pretty cold in the house.  I turned on a wall heater in our bedroom that we rarely use, gave the animals their breakfast (and in some cases morning medicines) and headed upstairs.  Right now according to Weatherbug on the computer  the temperature outside is about 3.3 degrees, with a windchill of -15 degrees.  It is not supposed to get above 20 degrees today, and tonight the temperature is going to plummet yet again.

Now all we need is some snow and maybe it will start to feel like a normal winter around here.

This year will be a big year of historic anniversaries

It looks like this year is going to be a HUGE year for history geeks like me.

It will be the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.  There will be a lot of festivities here in Boston commemorating that event, especially because of the U.S.S. Constitution.
