Normally I hate August. Today is different.

What on earth were they thinking?
Someone vandalized the Shaw monument today. It happened this afternoon, literally while I was working down the street. In fact, I walked past the monument on my lunch break. I really cannot fathom why someone would do such a thing. I know I am not your average person when it comes to how I feel about this particular monument, but still, I cannot understand it.

July and August Concerts
I just got this email today from Matthew Hall and so I thought I’d pass it along to the rest of you. There are three concerts he’s involved with, starting tonight, that help wrap up SoHIP.
We are marching to Bastille Day
On July 14th, Kelly and I headed to New Hampshire to join other family members at my sister’s place for a big family meal. And since I got to do a lot of the cooking, I had a grand old time.
Harborfest is over
And it has been a very, very busy week for me, between the two jobs and police details.
In honor of the 4th
I have some friends for whom the 4th of July is their favorite holiday of the year. Other are more middle of the road about it. Me? I’m not into huge groups of people waiting for things to go BOOM over their heads or the tourists that flood the city decking themselves out in flag clothes and leaving their trash everywhere. I grew up and now live in the two cities largely responsible for the birth of this nation. As a result I’m over the Liberty Bell and the Pops on the Esplanade.
So my first day back doing living history was good
Of course, I was asked just how hot the outfit was many times, just as I had often been asked when I was doing programs at places like Stones River National Battlefield and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park when I did programs in the summertime there.
The short answer is yes, it is quite warm. It’s wool.

A bit of history… to eat
This week will be the first time in well over a decade that I have worn any of my Civil War gear. So this week I tried a bunch of my stuff on and what do you know, it still fits, although the vest is going to need some adjustments. Still, I am excited about doing it, and to be getting involved with history again. And to get me in the spirit of things I decided to take a little trip to Milton, home of the G.H. Bent Company.
The new jobs
I have not talked about my jobs in a while, and I wanted to let people know how they were going.
They are going quite well.
A sign of our technological brilliance… and our general social ignorance.
Kelly found an article on Boston.com recently about the new application for smart phones that allows people to report a complaint if they feel they have been treated unfairly by the TSA. It was created by the Sikh Coalition, who saw the need for it probably because so many Americans, including many of those who should know better, can’t tell the difference between a Sikh and a Muslim.
