It’s official – we broke the record

After the light snow we got last night, it seems that Boston has officially broken the record for most snowfall in a single season.  Our current snow total is now 108.6 inches, beating the old record of 107.6 inches from the winter of 1995-1996.  Here in Boston, they began keeping records of snowfall in 1872.

Thankfully a lot of snow melted in the last couple of weeks, so the new snow hasn’t really done a whole lot to make anything worse.  But as the snow melts, it is revealing all the garbage and other stuff that got buried in the massive piles.

Ah, spring.

Outsourcing IT – not just happening to other people

It is happening to me.

I got word last week that my job is going to be outsourced to external contractors, with the idea that the organization will save money in the long run. I can’t say I agree, but I guess what I think doesn’t quite matter as much anymore, now that my job has an expiration date.  My last day is March 20th.

So once again, I will be looking for a job.  And I am just thrilled, let me tell you.

It’s time to end February School Vacation week, for good

I’m not writing this because I don’t think kids in school don’t work hard enough, because teachers have too much time off, or because I have some other ideas about school/teacher/union reform.  I’m writing this because 1) I grew up without a vacation in February and since moving to New England and finding out about it I’ve decided it’s an absurd practice, 2) I work with the public day in and day out and the very worst times of year to deal with people are school vacation weeks, and 3) Climate Change.

If I lost you on that last one, let me go into a little more detail.

We have definitely crossed the threshold of ridiculous

Right now it is zero degrees outside, and with the wind blowing pretty hard the wind chill is WAY below zero.  I think right now with the wind blowing at 12 miles an hour, the wind chill is about fourteen below zero.  And since the wind is gusting to even higher speeds, that wind chill is probably going to go even further into Antarctica territory.

And what is truly insane?  This is not going to be over anytime soon.

The North, Hardhome and Season Five of GoT

It has been a long time since I wrote anything about ASOIAF/GoT.  And there’s only a couple of weeks until Season 4 is out on DVD/Blu-Ray, and a couple of months until Season Five starts.

So Kelly and I recently watched the “Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life” special and they specifically talk a bit about Hardhome.  I have been thinking about what might be going on there in Season Five.  Sure, there will be lots of other stuff going on, but the North is the region that I think is my favorite, and so anything involving the North, including the Nights Watch and the Wildlings, is sure to get my attention.*

So here is what I think might happen with all things North.

Snow, snow everywhere – with pictures

This afternoon I got dressed to head outside for some quick errands: drop off some DVDs at the library; stop at the market across the street from the library for some milk; shovel out the steps and the walk.

Yet another winter storm

Well.  As I said to one of our neighbors recently, “I like winter, but I am not used to getting it all at once.”  This winter may have started off pretty mild, but starting at the end of January, we have now gotten a ridiculous amount of snow.  In fact, we broke a record for most snow in a 10 day period.  And now we are in the middle of the third major winter storm in two weeks.
