August is usually a pretty staid month for music here in Boston, but we’ve got some good concerts coming up. Everything from early music to Ravel is in the works for the next few weeks.

This just breaks my heart, for several reasons
I hate to see historical markers or monuments vandalized. It’s bad enough that my own ancestor’s monument was vandalized in recent years. I mentioned the other day that someone had vandalized the Shaw monument on Beacon Street. It happened while I was working literally down the street. Well, I had a chance to see the damage for myself.

What on earth were they thinking?
Someone vandalized the Shaw monument today. It happened this afternoon, literally while I was working down the street. In fact, I walked past the monument on my lunch break. I really cannot fathom why someone would do such a thing. I know I am not your average person when it comes to how I feel about this particular monument, but still, I cannot understand it.

History in the making, but not in a good way
There has not been a shark attack on a human being in Massachusetts since 1936. So naturally someone just had to go and ruin that long unspoiled record.

July and August Concerts
I just got this email today from Matthew Hall and so I thought I’d pass it along to the rest of you. There are three concerts he’s involved with, starting tonight, that help wrap up SoHIP.
Energy efficiency for the win
The past few weeks have held a lot of change for our humble home. Although it has not been the hottest summer on record for Boston (as far as I know) it has been rather warm. Kelly and I held out for a good month and a half before finally caving in and putting in our two small window AC units and turning them on. But that is not the only thing different.
Saturday July 21st, 2012 – 8:00pm Harvard Square – WAGNER, BARTÓK, & BRAHMS
Hi folks,
This is just a quick note to let you all know that I’m appearing with the Mercury Orchestra in their July 21st concert. I am appearing with members of The Seraphim Singers in the Bartók The Miraculous Mandarin. The program is:
Wagner Overture to Tannhäuser
Bartók The Miraculous Mandarin (complete)
Brahms Symphony No. 1 in c minor
Tickets are available online and at the door, though they’re $5 less if you buy them in advance. Don’t miss the chance to hear the Bartók performed. It’s rarely done and even more rarely done in complete form.
Hope to see you there.

This is why other drivers scare me
While on our way to visit my sister and her family in New Hampster, Kelly and I were unfortunate enough to be stuck behind a car that started driving a bit erratically. Then things really got crazy.
Just don’t look like a seal, buddy
Every summer one of the rituals we go through here in the Greater Boston area is the appearance of everyone’s favorite apex predator, carcharadon carcharius, or the Great White shark, off Cape Cod. I was just a kid when they filmed Jaws on Martha’s Vineyard but I do remember seeing all the references to the movie the next time my family went to the island. And apparently there are a lot of people (besides me) who still think about the movie and its relationship to the island, including the author of this new book that I very much would like to acquire.
Harborfest is over
And it has been a very, very busy week for me, between the two jobs and police details.
