Trying to enjoy life one day at a time

Well, after taking some time to process it, I guess I can go ahead and say (officially) that I am not going to the police academy this year.  I just wasn’t high enough on the list, I guess.  But the people involved in the process have been highly encouraging and supportive towards me, and so I will make another effort whenever they put together another class, either later this year or early next year.

In the meantime, it has been a humbling experience to get back into the job hunt full-time.  And to be honest, a little depressing.  But since I am Mr. Silver Lining, I am trying to find the bright side of the experience and move on.

So there’s a few things I am doing to keep myself entertained while I continue the (seemingly eternal) job hunt.

Concert at Memorial Church Harvard Sunday 2/16/14 6:00pm

From Matthew Hall comes word of a lovely concert this weekend, the first weekend of School Vacation week here in MA.  That’s important for those of you who, like us, work in the service industry.

Today in Equality

With the opening of the Sochi Olympic games on Friday there are all sorts of things going on right now to remind us that the world is full of both hateful bigots (I’m looking at you, Putin) and wonderful people (Canada, Scotland, that would be you.)

This is what has popped up in the latter category in my various news feeds today.  Enjoy.

Refusing to learn from experience

Sometimes, there is some wisdom in doing something yourself so you can actually understand it.  Regarding the winter weather debacle in Georgia, this is NOT one of those times.   This is not the sort of thing you want to figure out for yourself, any more than you want your architect to forget about silly things like plans so you can just “play it by ear”.  Learn from the wisdom and experience of others.  Hell, learn from your own experience, Atlanta.   It’s been only 3 years since your last winter storm nightmare.  Besides, your traffic is gridlocked in perfect weather on a normal day.  I have been there, I know.  Whenever I was driving to Macon for the weekend, I avoided Atlanta completely.  What made you think having everyone go home at the same time during a snowstorm was a good idea?

REMINDER- Meravelha tonight at #PBFund, PARK Restaurant, Cambridge

This is a reminder post for you Boston area music lovers that tonight is the Opus Affair Punch Bowl Fund at PARK in Cambridge.  It should be a great time, Geoff and I will be there, and we’re hoping to win the fund raising competition for Meravelha.  Please, come and have a drink for a good cause.

Details are here.

See you tonight!

Meravelha featured at Opus Affair Punch Bowl Fund

I’ve written about Meravelha in this space before.  Most recently I mentioned that they were up for nomination for the Opus Affair Punch Bowl Fund.  Well, they won, and now they need your help.  The Punch Bowl Fund is an event happening on 1/27/14 from 6pm-9pm at:

59 JFK Street, Cambridge, MA 02138

It should be a great time, its walking distance from the T, and with any luck Meravelha will win the money raised there as well.  Will you come and support music making in the greater Boston by purchasing a $5 drink?  This will be great socializing and great fun and I think we can all drink to that.

Geoff and I will be there.  See you on the 27th!

For my church organist friends

This popped up on our Twitter feed this morning.  Somehow I suspect you’ll all understand.

All that’s missing is one that says EJECT.

Want to sing in an opera?

I can’t make it out to Concord to do this, but it sounds like a heck of a good time.  If you end up doing this, please let me know?  This is an email I just received from my friend Greg of the Seraphim Singers.

Meravelha is awesome, the internets say so

You’ve probably seen me write in this space before about Meravelha concerts.  Teri Kowiak is the founder and as I write this I’m sitting next to Tim, one of the fabulous singers in the group.  I’ve had the pleasure of working front of house for Meravelha and listening to them rehearse and perform and I have to tell you, they don’t suck.  In fact, they’re really, really, good.  Apparently I’m not the only person who thinks this.  In fact, there are more than a few people who think this.

Now, you can join them and it won’t cost you a thing.

Because Indian food is always associated with the birth of Jesus

For the last 5 or so years a group of us has managed to fit in a feast of Indian food between singing services on Christmas Eve.  For the first few years, however many those were, we went to Bukhara.  The food there is reliably good and the service is always excellent.  It’s a short drive to the place where we sing midnight mass, and they have a parking lot.  Restaurants with parking lots are key in Boston.

Then things changed in 2013.
