Summer Jewelry Shows!

I have some shows coming up.  This weekend and next I’ll be vending at ASSEMBLED and SLAM respectively.  It should, hopefully, be a nice weekend so come on out this weekend and see me out by the Mystic River.  Next weekend I’ll be in Davis square while Artbeat is going on so there will be lots to see.

This is why I left IT

I tried for over three years to find a decent job in IT after I was laid off.  Looking for work, and generally trying to improve my IT knowledge and skills, became my new job.  I went back to school to improve my IT skills.  I gained several new certifications, picked up many more books and attempted to improve my skills as best I could.  Over three years of job fairs, workshops, endless resume rewrites, countless applications, all sorts of professional and personal networking, honing of cover letters, (you name it, and I did it) but nothing worked.  In three years I got less than five interviews.  I tried everything.  Of course, plenty of people had advice for me on how to find a job. Some was good, a lot was bad, and much of it was contradictory.

More adventures in plumbing… wheeeee…

All of the heavy rain we have experienced in the Greater Boston area recently seems to have reproduced the problem that Kelly and I had last October.

Yeah, that problem.

Portugal Day in Boston

Tomorrow, June 10th, is Portugal Day. It is a big holiday in Portugal in honor of Luis de Camoes, the writer of Portugal’s national epic poem, Os Lusiadas (The Lusiads).  Since there is such a big Portuguese population here in southern New England, it is a big deal in these communities.  And since my father is Portuguese, I try to remember these important days.

I saw this while leaving work today.

So maybe tomorrow, in honor of the holiday, I will enjoy some good home-cooked Portuguese food, and maybe some wine.

Your cry for the day

If you haven’t had a good cry lately, here it is.  I’m proud that this story happened in my home state and that the individuals involved did what they did out of love and compassion for both the animal and the officer involved.

Rest in Peace, Kaiser.

What NOT to say when you’re at a craft show

I’ve done 4 shows in the last two weeks.  It’s been tiring but fun.  I met some really fun and really talented crafters, especially at Cambridge Open Studios.  (COS is, by the way, also showing this weekend.  Yes, you should go if you can.  It’s amazing.)

What was striking was not only how great the community of crafters were to each other, but also how great most of the people visiting the show were to us.  However, like any barrel of apples, there were a few rotten ones.

Everything listed below was actually said to me or one of the people I met over the last two weekends.  When you’re at a craft show, don’t be this person.

Boston Strong

It’s been a little over a week since downtown blew up and everything went to hell, but since then Boston Strong has become the catchphrase for how we’ve all held up.  The whole tough New Englander attitude, some would say “crusty”, is well known.  We’re tough people and down through generations we’ve been through a lot.

I have no idea who it was who coined the phrase.  I hope it wasn’t some marketing VP somewhere who’s made a mint from it.  It has helped, and it has spawned Watertown Strong and Collier Strong, on their own indications of what we’ve been through separately and together and how we’ll persevere.

Check out some of the images, below the cut, that have come up in the last week plus that I’ve liked the best or that I think are the funniest representation of Boston Strong.
