Happy Birthday Frederick Douglass aka give the people what they want

Much of the world seems to be celebrating Valentines Day today.  Regular readers of this blog will know that I usually celebrate the anniversary of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre aka the Mob war in Chicago.  I have also been known to wear all black and express my affection to my Spirit Animal, St. Grumpy Cat.

Today I’ve chosen a different tack.

#BlackLivesMatter & #NoBoston2024 – The intersection of money, race & power

Anyone who isn’t a moneyed plutocrat in the very tiny ruling elite here in Boston – Marty Walsh, John Fish, Charlie Baker, and Shirley Leung, I’m looking at you – likely understands that yesterday’s announcement that Boston “won” the USOC nomination for the 2024 olympics is a Very Bad Thing.  The Boston 2024 group has existed for about a year and, chaired by Fish, has been trying to essentially shame the populace into believing that if we do not do this thing, invite the world to come here for a 3 week-long party 9 years from now, we’re provincial losers and that Boston isn’t fit for the world stage.

To put it bluntly, the people at Boston2024 are liars.

Congratulations, #AlisonBechdel !

One of my favorite cartoonists (whom Kelly and I had the privilege of meeting a few years ago) has won a MacArthur “Genius Grant“.  ThinkProgress also has this interview with her.

I am so excited for her.   I literally cheered when I read the news.

How to Play Internet Bingo!

No, our blog hasn’t been hijacked or hacked and this isn’t about some internet gambling site.  This is about something that most people deal with every day and probably don’t even know it.  I first ran into the idea in Childfree circles and discovered that it pretty much applies to everybody in one way or another.

It’s called Internet Bingo.  There are many forms of this “game”.  It happens online and offline and it certainly happens to all of us.  Trolls do it to us, well- meaning friends and family do it to us, even strangers do it to us.  You know what you get when you fill your Bingo card?  Congratulations, you’ve just been “Bingoed”.

Ready for the tutorial?

So at least two pots of gold then?

Yesterday while driving home from my new job in Watertown (guess I should post something about that sometime) we had a nasty little thunderstorm blow through.  It then left Greater Boston with a gorgeous double rainbow.

So when I saw it for myself, I figured I would stop and get a picture or two.

At Brimfield thinking of @TheBloggess

Geoff and I go to Brimfield every year.  Last year was the exception, we were too broke and working too many jobs to be able to take off the time to go.  This year, because we’ve saved our pennies and because Geoff starts a new job on Monday, (more on that later) we’re here.

Yes, some filler has been added to GoT

Last night’s episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones (First of His Name) definitively proved three things:

1) Hodor is awesome.

2) Brienne and Pod may well be the next Tyrion and Bronn in terms of comedy on the show.

3) One important ASOIAF character from the books may not ever make an appearance on the GoT television show.

The Internet tells me things

And today it has been telling me things with pictures.  And so, I am telling them to you.  A lot has been changing in the world and in our lives in the past few days, so you get pictures.

First, my favorite.

h/t to Teri for this one

The King is Dead, Long Live the King

If you missed Game of Thrones last night then you’re probably going to be confused by the title of this post.  That or you’ve already been spoiled by the internet from some other source.  Either way sorry/not sorry.

Geoff and I have read the books, in some cases more than once, so we know the general story line despite what Benioff and Weiss might do to it to streamline for TV.  That being said, the title of this post isn’t in and of itself a spoiler, it’s  tradition.  Either way, if you don’t want to know more, don’t go past the jump.

CHICKEN

So there was the Game of Thrones season 4 premiere.

Then this happened.

And then, the fan art.

This doesn't really need a caption, does it?
