What we’re reading now – March 2016 edition

I got home from work last night, bundled myself into my Dash-don’t-you-dare-lick-me outfit, and spent some time playing Shaws Monopoly and reading stuff and things on the intertubes.  Some of them were awesome, some were thought provoking, others were troll/bless your heart you stupid little millennial magnets, and some actually made me want to comment.  Here they are for your reading pleasure.

2015: A Year In Review

Before we get to the year that was or the year that will be, here’s your annual Christmas card.  Brought to you by the little dogs that keep us happy, on our toes, and forever finding rawhide chews in the strangest places.

All of us, yes, even Scratch, wish you the best in the New Year.

#WheresRory goes to @HarvardMuseum- The Glass Flowers part 2/2

Well, Rory has seen a lot in is trip at HMNH.  It’s taken four previous posts that you can view here, here, here, and here.  This is the last in the HMNH series.  Rory had a very busy day, but, as you’ll see, he got quite a sendoff from the staff when it was time to go home.

But first, more flowers.

Ok, technically, cacti. Either way, they're really cool.

#WheresRory goes to @HarvardMuseum- The Glass Flowers

Rory has made his way through much of HMNH at this point.  In my previous posts, he’s seen much of what the museum has to offer and even got a “backstage entrance”.  Thus far we haven’t seen Rory’s visit to the crown jewel of the HMNH collection, the Glass Flowers.

Rory is Furiously Happy about seeing the Glass Flowers.

#WheresRory goes to @HarvardMuseum- time for MORE #taxidermy

This is the third post in a series about Rory’s trip to HMNH.  This is the final taxidermy post and, as promised, there are some old friends in these halls.  Today’s photos are from New England Forests, The Great Mammal Hall, and the Arthropod Gallery.

We’ll start in New England Forests.

Rory! Don't turn around...

#WheresRory goes to @HarvardMuseum- time for #taxidermy

As I indicated in my post from the other day, my trip to HMNH with Rory involved a lot of photography.  Enough that if I put it all in one post I’d either crash WordPress or everyone would give up because it was tl;dr.  So, today we’ll see the photos from some of the parts of the museum that feature more dead things, though not quite as old.  That’s right, I’m talking about taxidermy.

#WheresRory goes to @HarvardMuseum

Today I took Rory out for his first Harvard adventure.  As I printed Rory at work at MIT he’s seen a little of that campus.  Tuesday, after I finished work at Harvard, Rory had a chance to see some of the, erm, flora and fauna of HMNH.  Ok, less flora and more fauna.

Some thoughts on Hell

In case it wasn’t clear from the title of this post, I’m going to use the word Hell a lot.  Mom, you might want to turn back now.  “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate.*

I left work today to go to my monthly massage appointment.  I can tell you right now that the massage was absolutely not what inspired this post.  The massage was divine and I feel SO much better.

It was the walk from the Chiropractic Office back to Kendall Sq to catch the shuttle that got me thinking.  What the Hell is up?

A big story of Massachusetts maritime history is coming to the movies

I don’t know what it is, but something about the sea fascinates me, and has for most of my life.  Maybe it’s because the sea has played various roles in my family history – some big and some small.  Maybe it’s because ships captured my imagination as a little boy the way trucks or cars or airplanes do for most young boys.  For years as a kid, my favorite “souvenir” I would get from my trips to the Cape or Martha’s Vineyard was one of those little wooden ships, usually a fishing boat of some kind, that you find in local shops.  And I have been reading books about New England maritime history for years.

So anyway, it turns out that early next year there is a movie coming out based on the Michael Tougias book The Finest Hours

Just like that, you’re gone

We don’t always know when a chapter in our lives ends.  Very often it happens with a small sound, a wisp of smoke, or the tiniest wrinkle.

Then there are days like today when a chapter closes with a resolute BANG!  A sound like a dictionary being dropped on the floor.  The slamming of an old solid oak door with all the force of the gale behind it – BOOM.
