Ah, what a mess

The snow has begun, and we have already gotten a few inches, slowly and steadily, over the past 12 hours or so. I already shoveled the steps once this afternoon and already you can’t tell I ever did it.     Even early this morning when I got up to make breakfast before Kelly had to go to work, we already had enough snow to coat everything outside.

And now they are saying we may get even more than they originally thought.  I will get some pictures tomorrow once it has more or less finished.

In the meantime, I am doing some Portuguese home cooking.  Maybe I will do some pictures of that too.

Happy New Year, all

It is nice to not have anything to do today, except for dropping off our rent.  It is a cold day outside, about 25 degrees Fahrenheit,   and we have lots of cuddling animals following us around the house.  And it is going to get even colder, and we are going to get a foot of snow by Friday, maybe a little more.  A Nor’easter is coming our way and there may even be blizzard conditions for a while.  That’s ok, as long as there are no White Walkers or wights.

Goodbye, 2013.  May 2014 be a much better year for us all.

Meravelha is awesome, the internets say so

You’ve probably seen me write in this space before about Meravelha concerts.  Teri Kowiak is the founder and as I write this I’m sitting next to Tim, one of the fabulous singers in the group.  I’ve had the pleasure of working front of house for Meravelha and listening to them rehearse and perform and I have to tell you, they don’t suck.  In fact, they’re really, really, good.  Apparently I’m not the only person who thinks this.  In fact, there are more than a few people who think this.

Now, you can join them and it won’t cost you a thing.

What we’re reading now- holiday edition

We’re back from our hiatus.  We’ve had our battle with Mass Health and we came out victorious.  So, it’s time to catch all of you up on what we’ve been reading and doing other than preparing to fight for our right to health care.

We have come a long way indeed

Wow.

The new cover of Sports Illustrated talks about this amazing World Series win and features Big Papi and the three Boston police officers from some of the most iconic photos on the day of the Boston Marathon bombing.  Those same three officers had been on a previous cover shortly after the bombing.

Winter is Coming

It may not be a winter that lasts for years, as it has been known to do in Westeros, but this winter has come a little early here in Boston this week, with temperatures not getting out of the 40s during the day and dropping into the 20s at night.  We had to turn on the heat for the first time in a good while.  And of course all the animals start getting a bit more cuddly at night, except for Rerun, who wants to be on the bed but otherwise gets a little grumpy if you invade his space.

Hopefully we will get back into the habit of more regular posts now, at least that is my intent.  I think I will try to talk a bit more about some of the more interesting cooking I am doing this season.

Happy Halloween and Go Sox!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to say thank you for all of the kindness and consideration given to us this past week.  It really does mean a lot to me to get so many cards, phone calls, visits, and all of the other things people have done for Kelly and me.  We really feel loved.

And as if the universe wanted to say “sorry Geoff, here’s something to cheer you up”, my beloved Red Sox won the World Series last night, right here in Boston at Fenway Park.  It is so awesome to walk around today wearing one of my Red Sox shirts and have total strangers – some with Red Sox gear, some without – suddenly smile from ear to ear and give a thumbs up, or laugh and say “Go Sox” or all sorts of other combinations.  It really makes me feel great.  Maybe 2013 will have some redeeming qualities after all.

And I wanted to say Happy Halloween to everyone!

Here’s some great creative costumes to check out.  And of course, it wouldn’t be Halloween without the Jack Chop. *

*And if you haven’t seen the Jack Chop infomercial yet, what’s wrong with you?  Watch it, just remember it’s NSFW.

More things you should be reading right now

Geoff and I have been dealing with a pile of bureaucratic red tape so high that 1) we’re tired and 2) I know now how to spell bureaucratic without looking it up or using spell check.  So, in lieu of real content I present you with More things you should be reading right now.  All links are, as always, SFW.

Fall is here… so long, summer…

And don’t let the door hit you on your way out.

Seriously, I have been wanting summer to go away for some time now, and not just because fall is my favorite season.  Largely because I am tired of being hot all the time.  Sure, we have some window AC units at home, but it is still not as cool in the house as I would like.  And my major place of employment is an 18th century building with no AC.

But I always try to find silver linings.
