Some thoughts on Hell

In case it wasn’t clear from the title of this post, I’m going to use the word Hell a lot.  Mom, you might want to turn back now.  “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate.*

I left work today to go to my monthly massage appointment.  I can tell you right now that the massage was absolutely not what inspired this post.  The massage was divine and I feel SO much better.

It was the walk from the Chiropractic Office back to Kendall Sq to catch the shuttle that got me thinking.  What the Hell is up?

Cambridge Open Studios is this weekend! Don’t miss it!

If you haven’t gotten a Mother’s Day gift yet (and what are you waiting for, I mean really) or a graduation/birthday/yay winter is over gift then this weekend is the perfect time.  Cambridge Open Studios is happening all over Cambridge from 12-6 tomorrow and Sunday.  Check out the downloadable guide here.

There’s even a free shuttle to get you from place to place.  Yep, free.

Cambridge Open Studios 2015

I’ll be exhibiting in the same place where I was last year, the gallery at Cambridge College at 1000 Mass Ave.  There will be music, free food and drink, and we’ll have dancers who will be demonstrating their art throughout the day as well.  We’ve also got some student artists from Cambridge Rindge and Latin showcasing their photography which is super cool.

Come on by, invite a friend or three or bring your mom.  It’s going to be a beautiful weekend.

See you there!

Spring finally arrives… and so does Game of Thrones

Well, the weather has finally warmed up enough that I can reasonably wear shorts outside.  Most of the snow piles have disappeared.  This nasty winter seems to have claimed what I hope is its last casualty: my truck.

Basil and the pothole from hell

Poor Basil.  He has suffered immensely this winter.  Still, our Mini Cooper has, like us, managed to survive this record-breaking winter and has been buried in snow more times than I can recall.  At least digging him out isn’t so bad most of the time since he is so small.  And it certainly makes it easier to park in narrow spots nestled between snow piles.

But getting through this winter unscathed was not meant to be, I guess.  Last night, on Route 99 where it goes under Rutherford Ave in Charlestown, we hit what was probably the biggest pothole I have ever seen, at least on a road that wasn’t being washed out underneath.

Support Cambridge Local Businesses and Win Great Prizes!

I received this email from Cambridge Local First and I think it’s GREAT idea.  Certainly this winter weather, now record breaking, has been hard on all of us.  But it has been especially hard on local business who don’t have a national or international infrastructure over which they can spread the cost and losses.

Join Cambridge Local First in this innovative and fun way to bring some of the lost revenue back into our local community.  And, if you’re one of our readers who isn’t local to the greater Boston area, give your own local businesses some love.  Shop, eat, bank, and do business locally!

I am sounding like a broken record by this point

but we have yet another big snow storm on the way.  Another blizzard, in fact.

The North, Hardhome and Season Five of GoT

It has been a long time since I wrote anything about ASOIAF/GoT.  And there’s only a couple of weeks until Season 4 is out on DVD/Blu-Ray, and a couple of months until Season Five starts.

So Kelly and I recently watched the “Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life” special and they specifically talk a bit about Hardhome.  I have been thinking about what might be going on there in Season Five.  Sure, there will be lots of other stuff going on, but the North is the region that I think is my favorite, and so anything involving the North, including the Nights Watch and the Wildlings, is sure to get my attention.*

So here is what I think might happen with all things North.

Snow, snow everywhere – with pictures

This afternoon I got dressed to head outside for some quick errands: drop off some DVDs at the library; stop at the market across the street from the library for some milk; shovel out the steps and the walk.

And while I was out, I also got some pictures.

Yet another winter storm

Well.  As I said to one of our neighbors recently, “I like winter, but I am not used to getting it all at once.”  This winter may have started off pretty mild, but starting at the end of January, we have now gotten a ridiculous amount of snow.  In fact, we broke a record for most snow in a 10 day period.  And now we are in the middle of the third major winter storm in two weeks.

Time to break out the barbed wire and football pads, everyone

In popular culture, there is sort of a trope that when the actual apocalyptic event is over, there is always a struggle among the survivors over the few remaining resources.

To some extent, the same is true after Snowpocalypseageddon here in Greater Boston.  Everyone has already fought for the last loaf of bread or gallon of milk, so the next thing to fight over is parking spots. And boy, do people get medieval about those.
