Lack of sleep is getting to me

I want to offer an apology to all the people I should be calling, or hanging out with, or otherwise spending time interacting with, because I have not done those things much lately.

For a few weeks now, most of what I have been concerned with is trying to get some rest.

Direwolves and the Stark children

As I am rereading the entire Song of Ice and Fire series (as it exists so far), I am spending a lot more time wondering about some of the symbolism in the series.  And it seems to me that the direwolves are literally and figuratively the symbols of the Starks, and each individual wolf is a reflection of its owner.

Happy 4th of July everyone

Here in Boston we had some scheduling insanity due to the weather predicted for today.  Even though the big Boston Pops fireworks event was moved to Thursday the 3rd from Friday the 4th, the festivities still began early and then ended with a bit of chaos when the bad weather blew in shortly after the fireworks ended.

And wow, did the weather get ugly.

IT redundancy really is your friend

Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I have managed to rebuild our server into a better machine than it was.  But for some reason the hard drive from the old server was giving me fits, trying to move data.  Perhaps it was damaged somehow.  I am not sure.

But I do know this: a backup of the backups saved our data.

Beautiful spring day today

Kelly and I were working at a craft fair trying to sell some of her jewelry and the weather was just gorgeous.  In the morning it was a bit low so I walked to a little neighborhood market to get a bite to eat for us.  While there the nearby railroad crossing started flashing and dinging as a train approached the crossing.  So I walked over to take a look.

Rerun is home, safe and sound

Rerun is home from Angell Animal Medical Center and we are glad to have him back.  You should have seen Thumbelina react when Rerun came home.  She danced a little circle around him and “kissed” him a lot.  She’s so happy he is home.  As are we all.  I missed my furry little buddy.  He has not fully recovered, and he has several medications that he has to take for a little while.  But he is not vomiting anymore, and he has his appetite back.

Thoughts on winter in New England

A lot of people hate winter, especially after so many days and nights of snow and cold temperatures.  People complain bitterly about it and pray for spring to get here faster.

I am not one of them.  I like winter, and I believe in addition to the bad it has much good.  Just like any other season.  But here in New England it is a very distinct season, and not watered down at all.  You get beautiful winter scenes like no other.

That’s one of the things I love most about New England: it has seasons.  Four very different, very distinct seasons.

Being a Stubborn Dachshund has Consequences

Yesterday Rerun had his second bout in a little over a week of vomiting and listlessness.  Last night was the worse of the two episodes and it was clear by bedtime that he wasn’t a happy dog.  He didn’t want to eat anything and he was clearly uncomfortable.  He woke us about every hour through the night heaving, vomiting, or whining.  We were encouraging him to vomit because there was clearly something bothering him that he needed OUT.

Winter is coming (back)

It looks like today will be the last “balmy” day for a while, insofar as the temperature was well above freezing most of the day.  Starting tonight temperatures will begin to drop, and they are predicted to not go above freezing for a good while – possibly as long as two weeks.  And we will probably get more snow too, starting tomorrow night.  So enjoy today, Boston, but prepare to be cooped up inside for a while.  You aren’t going to want to spend a lot of time outside after today.  So go grab some DVDs from the library or Netflix or whatever and catch up on your favorite show or shows.  You might have some free time in the near future.   Or if you are like me, grab a stack of books.  It will be a good time to curl up with that monster George R.R. Martin book with a cup of something hot to drink and some small furry companions at your side.
