Smoky is doing well, an update

Smoky came home from the hospital on Monday.  He was SO ready to come home.  He was pressing his nose up against the bars on the carrier and purring and making it *very* clear that he was done at the hospital.  Surprisingly, he was a very good patient.  He’s a nice cat but he can be pretty high strung and he doesn’t handle change well so I wasn’t sure how he’d handle being there.  But, he was good.  Everyone was sad to see him go as he was, apparently, very affectionate.

Radioactive Cat gets to come home today!

I just got a call from Angell.  Smoky has fallen below the Federally mandated levels of radiation allowable after his I-131 treatment so we can go and get him.  Yay!  We have some errands to run and then we’re going to go and pick him up and bring him home.  He’s going to live in the guest room for the next 2 weeks.  That will drive the other animals BONKERS.  But that’s how it’s got to be.

I am so excited to have him back.  He should be a happier, healthier kitty.  Yay!

Smoky is officially radioactive

The Doctor called around 5:30 this evening and Smoky is officially irradiated.  We talked about it in advance, but he ended up getting a very high dose.  Usually the highest does for non-cancerous cats is 7 millicuries.  Smoky got exactly that.  That does is two and a half times the usual does for a hyperthyroid cat.  Partly this is because we’re trying to zap his entire thyroid and the cystic goiter that’s growing on it and partly this is because this procedure is happening while he’s still on his methimazole.

Back from New Hampshire

Yesterday Kelly and I put Rerun and Thumbelina in the car, drove up to Lowell to pick up my Aunt Donna, and then drove to New Hampshire to see Liz, Dan, and the kids.  Once again the dogs ran around with their cousin Ralph for a while, and poor little Ralph was so excited to see us that he literally peed everywhere.  And I did not help keep a clean carpet either, as I accidentally tracked dirt and mud into the house myself.  That’s because I am a genius.  Really.

Smoky is eating, a lot.

Normally this would not be cause for celebration.  In fact, we usually try to keep him from eating too much since he’s the largest animal in the house.  But since Monday’s Thyroid Storm and all of the ensuing insanity, he’s actually smaller than Bucky now.  I was actually amazed at how light he was when I picked him up last night to get his pills into him and give him his shot.

An update on the patient

Smoky actually wanted to eat this morning.  That’s a huge improvement.  For a cat who usually inhales his food, the fact that he didn’t want to eat last night was discouraging.  He showed up for his pill pockets but didn’t want to eat them either.  We had to drop them down his throat.  He’s a creature of habit all right.

The Perfect Storm

Yesterday was Smoky’s drop off day for his I-131 treatment.  Per the instructions for his admission, he’d been off of his methimazole for a week.  Over the last week we’d been monitoring him carefully.  He’d been more heat sensitive than usual, he’d been breathing a bit heavier than normal, and his skin was getting drier and itchier.  On Sunday night I had to clean his ears and treat the driest of his skin with petroleum jelly because it was just so itchy and flaky that he was scratching it until it bled.

Kelly’s shower is over and it went well

We had a long but productive weekend.  Of course Kelly and her mom were busy with all of the bridal shower stuff, but they also managed to get a lot of other things done, like reorganizing the guest room so we would have more storage space for wedding stuff.  I helped out where I could, and I also managed to complete a little kitchen project I had wanted to do that will give us a little more storage space.  All in all, it was a pretty good weekend.  I was only there for the early part when things were being set up, and then I left after I made sure they did not need me to run any more errands.  So I did not get any pictures or anything, obviously, but it is my understanding that a lot of pictures were taken by Liza and so hopefully at some point we will be able to see some of those.
