I am sounding like a broken record by this point

but we have yet another big snow storm on the way.  Another blizzard, in fact.

Greetings from the snowy tundra of Cambridge

I woke up a couple of hours ago and checked outside.  Dave Epstein had predicted that many of us would have a foot of snow or more by this point, and I am pretty sure his predictions have been born out in many places across Massachusetts.    I cam’t tell how much snow we have gotten so far but it looks like we have gotten enough to almost reach the top of the Mini’s tires.

Looking out the front door a few minutes after 7 AM.

Ecuador, Japanese Food, and Bugs

My friend Shoyo is a pretty cool guy.  He’s an undergraduate student at BU, he’s got a wicked sense of style, and he’s been volunteering at HMNH since he was about 5 years old.  He’s also the only thing I can think of that unites the three things listed in the title of this post.

Calling all Boston area Rock and Mineral geeks!

The Boston Mineral Club is having our annual Auction on January 10th.  (That’s this Saturday for those of you following along at home.)  Geoff and I are rock nerds.  I’ve been a huge rock nerd since I was a kid and I’m THRILLED that I’m finally going to have a chance to go to a live gem and mineral auction in person.

A new Christmas tradition?

Kelly and I are big Neil Gaiman fans, in case you didn’t know already.

Now we have yet another reason to love the guy.  Last year he recorded a wonderful version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: a version in which he reads from Charles Dickens’ own annotated copy, as Charles Dickens, complete with clothes and beard.

Christmas Card 2014

We’re back at it again this year, we’re saving on postage being environmentally friendly and putting our Christmas Card online.  There’s also the time factor.  It took me more than 8 hours to wrap the Christmas gifts that are being shipped to 3 places in two other states and being handed out here in MA.  Actually mail merging the labels for the over 100 names on our list, labeling, signing and then mailing the cards (maybe not in that exact order) is WAY more time than I have.  So, an hour or so of photo editing it is.

And so, I give you, our 2014 Christmas Card.

I think I like Yorkshire

Although Kelly has been to the UK before, I have myself never been there.  So I have no idea what I would actually make of anyplace in the UK, frankly.  Certainly there is a lot of interesting history to see all over the place.

Still, I think I would like to see Yorkshire.  It strikes me as a very interesting place, for a variety of reasons.

The identity of Lightbringer – a theory

OK, that title alone should constitute a spoiler warning for anyone who might otherwise complain about spoilers.

Kelly and I may have figured out something highly significant, with the assistance of the new book George R.R. Martin released recently, The World of Ice and Fire.

The possible identity of Lightbringer, and boy is this a doozy of a theory.

A beautiful and storied ship, part two

So like I was saying in my earlier post, I managed to get a pretty-much full tour of the Fletcher-class destroyer USS Cassin Young last Saturday.   I took a lot of pictures.
