Around the same time our “Stable Genius” leader was tweeting about the size of his “nuclear button” like he was a high school freshman, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that they are going to hold a session on January 16th about teaching federal, state, and local first responders how to “prepare for a nuclear detonation”. Both Guam and Hawaii have been more focused on nuclear threats in recent weeks and months, as both places are likely within the range of ballistic missiles from North Korea.

Bitter cold in Boston this week
When I got up this morning, the temperature was 4 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind chill was -10 degrees Fahrenheit. We may even get some snow tomorrow night and Thursday. I will try to get some pictures and post them if we do. And behind that storm will come more bitter cold, what our fave meteorologist Dave Epstein is calling “the worst of the winter”. Predicted lows for Friday and Saturday are well below zero, not even including wind chill.
ETA: The National Weather Service is now saying that Thursday could bring a “significant winter storm” with predictions from 4 to 8 inches to as much as 12 inches of heavy wet snow (with numbers possibly changing depending on how far inland the storm tracks), plus high winds, which means downed trees and power outages are much more likely. We may even have ourselves a blizzard. Oh my.

Well. It has been a long time since I have posted anything political. And that is because frankly, it has been just too depressing a topic to really talk about lately, particularly when I try to put it all in historical perspective, which is what I do – after all, I am a historian.
Not to be too dramatic, but I am really, really worried.

Welcome, October
Ok, so it’s October 1st. The Federal Government has effectively shut down. Open enrollment for the ACA has started, but the website isn’t working. In fact, until about 11:00am this morning, the MA iteration of the website didn’t even reflect that open enrollment for people looking for ACA healthcare effective 1/1/14 had begun.

And, no, Nemo in this case isn’t a cute little clownfish. Nemo was a giant record setting Blizzard/Hurricane that just dropped 2-3 feet of snow on us and flooded out parts of the New England coastline. Whee?

This popped up on Boston.com and it just thrilled me to pieces. These guys filmed this in the wee smalls this morning in between bands of falling snow. You’ve gotta figure that the chances of them ever getting to do this again without getting run over are basically nil, so I’m thrilled they did it.

How to market the end of the world
This whole, “OMG the world is going to end on 12/21/12 !!11!!!1!”… “or maybe not” thing has made both of us a little testy. Geoff has mentioned in the past in references to other Doomsday predictions that also went nowhere that he was tempted to create Geoffrey’s Apocalyptic Passover Service, LLC.
He’s beginning to regret that he didn’t.

and clearly, the world is indeed going to end this month. Because we now know that the rapture did in fact take place.
