Illumination in the oddest places

Generally speaking, I am not a fan of popular culture, but on occasion I am pleasantly surprised by it.  And on even more rare occasions, it shocks me.  Not in a bad way, but in the way that you are shocked when you experience a true windfall.

That is how I feel about A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of ThronesThe books AND the TV show that they inspired.

In case there was any doubt Peter Dinklage is awesome…

here is the definitive proof.

I had not seen this before, so if you have, sorry.  But when Dinklage won his Emmy two years ago for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, among the people he thanked was the woman who takes care of his dog.  How classy and made of awesome is that?

It’s good to laugh to keep from crying…

and honestly, I don’t remember the last time I laughed so often and so hard at anything, much less at a subject that has hit Kelly and I personally so very, very hard.  And the economy has definitely hit Kelly and I quite hard in the past few years.

Thank you, Stephen Colbert.

Hopefully, things will settle down a bit now

Needless to say, I am thrilled that they found the two suspects and that one of them (apparently the younger brother) has been taken alive, which will hopefully give the investigators the chance to get all the details they need.  I sure hope so.  It will be nice to have a nice, calm week to settle down to a regular routine again.  Admittedly, after this past week, I almost wouldn’t be surprised to have Godzilla march down Commonwealth Avenue.  If that happens, I guarantee that I will not be one of the people who waits to get stepped on.

So yeah, tomorrow I am going to try to do some housecleaning, put up our new HDTV antenna, and do some good Portuguese home cooking.  Maybe I can get a decent night’s sleep tonight too.

Sleep tight, Boston.  Sweet dreams.

King’s Chapel on the news

We opened early today – about 8 AM – and stayed open until about 7 PM, when our second service ended.  So a long day today.  But a reporter from Channel 6 in Providence stopped in to talk to our new minister as well as a few Marathon runners.  You may see yours truly doing security in the  background.

How to know when you’ve been watching too much Downton Abbey

Last week my mother and I were talking on the phone and she mentioned how she and my dad are fans of Downton Abbey.  I mentioned that Geoff and I had never seen it.  Not one episode.

That could not stand, so my mother shipped us season 1 and 2 on DVD.  They arrived just before Nemo did.  We watched all of them during the storm.  We may have over done it a touch.

Sometimes the posts just write themselves

This is our 500th post here at KellyandGeoff.com.  Geoff and I were wondering what to write.  Perhaps we should observe the occasion with something special?

Then we came across these links and realized that we had to share them with the world.  Sometimes, you just have to go with what finds you.  Thank you, internet.

I met David Sedaris, again.

The first time I met David Sedaris was at a book signing several years ago.  I met him again in 2010 when Geoff and I saw him read and sign Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk at the Harvard Book Store.  Last Tuesday I worked a private event for the book store in which I got to spend about an hour and a half just sitting and chatting with David Sedaris.

Yes, there are times when my life is awesome.

So long, DirecTV. We’ll miss you.

This past week Kelly and I ended our service with our satellite provider.  Kelly had been a customer with them for some six or more years, and she loves them.  But we have been unable to get them to fix our problem for us, and so we ended our service.  No point in paying for something that isn’t working, especially when you are as poor as us.

Turns out that I am half Cylon

Yeah, I know what you are thinking.  “Um, Geoff, what are you talking about?”

Well, I have definitive proof that the Cylons, at least the ones from Earth, were Portuguese.  No wonder we were such great explorers for so long.
