On July 14th, Kelly and I headed to New Hampshire to join other family members at my sister’s place for a big family meal. And since I got to do a lot of the cooking, I had a grand old time.

New Hampshire Gift Shops and Other Scary Things
As you may have seen from Geoff’s post from the other day about Inappropriate Napping, we spent Thursday in New Hampshire with Geoff’s parents, sister, brother in law, and the kids. Before going out to dinner we went to a local gift shop aimed at the camping and antiquing tourists that come through the area. It was… an experience.

This is why other drivers scare me
While on our way to visit my sister and her family in New Hampster, Kelly and I were unfortunate enough to be stuck behind a car that started driving a bit erratically. Then things really got crazy.
What a way to go
OK, so apparently the universe is not done sending me slightly macabre and random stories. This time, I’m OK with this. This one is almost funny.
This post may not make much sense
I’m really tired. I’m not quite brain dead/crispy fried/toasted/speaking gibberish like I was on Saturday and Sunday nights, but I’m not far off.
A hero of mine gets the cold shoulder
Many of you who know me know that I am a great admirer of Bruce Schneier, a renowned cryptology and security expert who has been a thorn in the side of those who believe all security issues can be solved with big, expensive machines and the push of a button. He is the inventor of the term “security theater”, or measures that are more effective at looking like you are doing something than actually doing anything to make you safer. I have several of his books and I highly recommend them. Anyway, recently Bruce was uninvited from testifying in front of Congress at the insistence of the TSA. I imagine this has something to do with the fact that he is a very vocal critic of the TSA and many of their policies.
Family visit
Yesterday we had the pleasure of a visit from my sister Liz and her kids, my nephews Will and Ben and niece Kate. We took them on a quick tour of Casa Dachshund. For the first time they had the chance to meet our cats, and it was interesting to see how everyone reacted. Scratch was his usual self, very friendly and outgoing, and so he greeted everyone. Bucky was in his favorite spot, in my old office chair near the front bay window. He did not even get up as far as I know. But surprisingly Smoky actually came out to greet everyone too.
Security versus the illusion of security
Back from New Hampshire
Yesterday Kelly and I put Rerun and Thumbelina in the car, drove up to Lowell to pick up my Aunt Donna, and then drove to New Hampshire to see Liz, Dan, and the kids. Once again the dogs ran around with their cousin Ralph for a while, and poor little Ralph was so excited to see us that he literally peed everywhere. And I did not help keep a clean carpet either, as I accidentally tracked dirt and mud into the house myself. That’s because I am a genius. Really.
This is just precious, precious I tell you.
Those of you who know us know that Geoff and I HATE to fly. I’m generally not a fan of traveling, but I specifically hate to fly. It isn’t that I dislike planes or have a problem with a fear of flying or anything like that. It’s the TSA. I hate the TSA with the fiery passion of a 1,000 suns.
