Kittehs!

Back in December my parents lost their Elder States Kitty, Maxx, to cancer.  It was right around Christmas and both of my parents have missed him a lot since.  Maxx was… particular.  The offspring of a tiny calico who formerly lived next door and a GIANT neighborhood Tom who was probably part or all Maine Coon, Maxx had a tiny head, huge body, and was all love.  He was a lap and shoulder cat who liked to sit in the chair in the living room with my Dad when he read or, ahem, “rested his eyes” and either cuddle on his lap or perch on his shoulder as if reading whatever my Dad was reading.

About 2 weeks ago my parents got to feeling that it was about time to add a new feline or two to the house.  My sister went online and looked for Maine Coon cats that needed a new home.  They found two 6 month old brothers who had been surrendered by their owner due to lack of time to care for them.  They had been surrendered at a high kill shelter in the south and had been transferred to a no kill shelter near where my parents live.  They applied, were approved, and were able to pick up the boys this past Saturday.

Introducing Meezer and Moon.  Pictures and commentary provided by my Mom.  All photos were taken at the shelter before the boys were picked up and taken home.

Meezer was pooped.

Here is a picture of a very tired Meezer.  He is more laid-back than his brother Moon, but they are both full of energy and love to play with a black shoe lace on the living room carpet.

This is Moon.  I can tell because he has more fur coming out of his ears.  This is an unusually quiet moment for him.  He usually does not want to miss anything and will bring you a toy to play with, even if it belongs to Jasmine!

Moon says, "let me OUT!"

This is Moon again.  When not taking a kitten nap, he is alert and ready to play, or attack your sweater zipper.  He also is the most vocal and is not shy about telling you that he wants your attention.

Here is Moon again!!!  I think he also likes to have his picture taken.  As you can see, these photos were taken at the rescue shelter before we brought them home.  They have been with us only 3 days, but are acting like they own the house already.  The first day they arrived, both kittens jumped onto Dad’s lap when he sat in the red chair.  That is what he misses most about Maxx, the chair time, so he was very happy.  Meezer stayed on his lap, but Moon climbed up on his shoulder just like Maxx used to do.

Moon woke me up this morning at 5 am, by climbing under the covers and sleeping on my pillow.  Without using his claws, he grabbed my face and started licking my chin.  How can you not like that?  I am wondering if this is basic Maine Coon behavior or did we just get lucky.

So, those are the newest family members.  I am hoping that we’ll get more photos from my Mom and Dad soon.  Enjoy the pretty kitties.

Fabulous music to share!

The lovely Nathan from choir was quick with his iPhone today and recorded both the Anthem and the Communion Motet.  I’ve uploaded them here for your enjoyment.

April 2nd & 3rd- Mark Your Calendars!!

Hi folks!

We have a big weekend coming up here in Brookline and Cambridge on April 2nd and 3rd and I wanted to tell you all about it NOW so you can mark your calendars, arrange for babysitting, rent a car, book your flight, etc.  That’s right, it’s THAT exciting.

On the evening of Saturday, April 2nd will be the annual Episcopal Church of Our Saviour Dinner and Auction.  There will be drinks, a silent auction of all sorts of great items (curated with an assist from yours truly), dinner catered by the fantastic Lisa Shaw (she’s handling the food at our wedding, come to the auction for a preview) and a live auction by professional auctioneer Dan Smith.  On offer will be everything from jewelry and Red Sox tickets to time in vacation homes, voice lessons, and private dinners catered in your home.  It is always a great night and it is one of only two major fund-raising events of the year for the Parish.

The schedule is:

5:30pm Silent Auction 7:00pm Dinner 8:00pm Live Auction

Sunday, April 3rd at 3:00pm is a can’t miss performance by The Seraphim Singers.  I’ve sung with this group for over a decade and this is probably the most exciting concert we’ve ever done.  We’re doing the entire Bach St. John Passion with the Orchestra of Emmanuel Music.  We’ll be performing in the acoustically lovely St. Paul Parish in Harvard Square, home of the Boston Boy Choir, and also of the St. Paul Adult Choir, who will be joining us for parts of the Passion.  A reception to meet the musicians will follow the concert.

Though I have had the opportunity to perform the St. John Passion several times in my life, this is the first time I have had the opportunity to perform as a soloist, so please, if you are available that afternoon, I urge you to attend.  This is one of the monumental works of choral literature and should not be missed.  If you have never come to one of my concerts before, this is the one to come to.  If you have come to one before and never come to another again, don’t miss this one.

If you have any questions, please email me or Geoff.  I’m making this post sticky so it stays at the top of the blog till April 4th.  Please check under it for new postings.

Thanks, everyone!

A shopping post!

That is entirely self serving…

I like RueLaLa for shopping.  They have great sales and excellent customer service.  As it so happens, right now they are having a sale on Vera Wang home stuff and one of the items is the china pattern we have registered for.  And it is significantly cheaper than the price at Macy’s where our registry proper is.  So, if you’re looking to do some advance shopping for us, you might want to check out RueLaLa.  If you need an invite code, here you go.  The pattern is Vera Wang “Imperial Scroll.”

Happy shopping!

A general update since returning home

First of all, a HUGE thank you to everyone who emailed, called, sent flowers, and kept me entertained while I was incarcerated in the hospital.  It is such a huge relief to be able to do things like shower and comb my hair again.  Also, sleeping in my own bed is really, really nice.  While my hospital bed wasn’t particularly bad, it just wasn’t mine.

For those of you who might be thinking about getting 29 electrodes superglued to your head on a lark, know this.  I have had to treat my hair with baby oil and wash it 3 times and I am STILL pulling glue out of it.  There have been times when Geoff, God bless him, has reached over and pulled a flake of glue out that I couldn’t see, just like the apes on National Geographic groom one another.  That’s love, I tell you.  The bonus?  The glue looks a LOT like dandruff.  Awesome.  Thankfully, everyone in choir at church this morning was very  understanding when I explained that I did not, in fact, have snow and/or dandruff in my hair.

In other news, I didn’t get either job that I interviewed for at Major Local Music School, however each person that I interviewed with did tell me that they wanted to encourage me to apply for other positions within the school.  This is good, I think.  So I will do that, and I will mention that I have met with both of them and see where that gets me.  I REALLY want to work there.  Please keep your fingers crossed for me.

Also, keep your eyes peeled here.  We’re going to be adding a blogroll to the side of the page.  There were so many fantastic suggestions emailed to me of stuff to read that we’re going to keep track of it in one place so that you all can share in the hilarity.

I think that’s it for now.  Thanks, everyone.

Brain Scans: Day 5

FREEDOM!

I just spoke with my neurologist and they’re going to let me go this afternoon.  The preliminary results are that I didn’t have any outright seizures but that I had a scattering of Sharp Wave* activity.  I have an appointment to follow up with her the week after next and she’ll have the final results then.  There is a lot of data to process, so it takes a while to go over everything (EEG, Video, Audio, reports from the staff, etc.)  I should know if there is any definitive diagnosis when I see her next, but for the moment I get to go home.  They’re going to come and unhook me in a little while and then I can take a shower, wash my hair, and Geoff can come and get me.

Yay!

~Kelly

*Sharp Waves:  On an EEG, sharp waves are deviations from a normal brain wave activity and are distinguished by more sharply contoured waveforms of varying amplitude, or voltage. The duration of each sharp wave is 70 to 200 milliseconds. Spike waves, sharp waves, or distinct patterns of spike and sharp waves or spike and slow waves may be indicative of seizure activity.

Brain Scans: Day 4- Flowers!

This morning as I was in the hours between taking my morning meds and finally dropping off to sleep (total time awake almost 24 hours) a nice old man with a Southie accent arrived and delivered my flowers!  Very exciting. They are from my Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister.  😀

Brain Scans: Day 4

I suppose this is technically more like an extension of Day 3.  My neuro came and visited me yesterday afternoon and basically said that my brain hasn’t been misbehaving in the expected ways.  So, last night was sleep deprivation night.  I woke up at 9:00am yesterday, napped off and on till noon, and then was up till, well, now.  The goal is to provoke my brain to misbehave so we can catch it on film and then know what is really going on.  I’ve had people wishing me “happy seizing” all night long.

I had no trouble staying awake and it’s only now, when my asthma has started acting up, that I’m starting to feel tired.  I have breakfast and an asthma treatment to look forward to sometime in the next hour, and then I can probably sleep and hope that my brain short circuits in the appropriate way.  By the way, the thing that triggered my asthma?  The perfume of the lady that took my vital signs at 5:00something AM.

It’s raining and gross outside.  Hopefully it’s a really good day for a nap and a seizure as well.

Brain Scans: Day 3

Well, apparently my brain is not performing as desired. (This is news?) I keep setting off alarms while awake and feeling more or less fine, but have only set off one alarm, that I remember, while asleep. I slept fitfully last night, though I did manage to make it to REM sleep. I had a dream in which the founder of the company that laid me off showed up. I have no earthly idea why, but he was there.
I slept a good portion of the day today. For some reason I was really tired. I know it’s noisy here and that I can’t sleep more than 4 hours at a shot, but I was just really groggy all this morning. One of the residents came in to see me and I know I talked to him but I don’t remember what I said. I think he’s coming back later, so I should find out.

Since you all have been so fantastic about sending me stuff, I thought I’d post it here. A photo of my helmet.

I took this:

The safety helmet of DOOM.
The safety helmet of DOOM.

last night when my new night nurse came on duty. She was highly amused by the fact that I took a photo of it and actually seemed to warm to me quite a bit. I was listening to MP4s sent to me by a friend from choir when she came in and when she found out I was singing in them she was very impressed and asked me all about them. I like her, I hope she comes back tonight.

Yesterday’s promised passel of med students never appeared, unless they snuck in while I was napping.  I managed to get through the day yesterday without 1 full neuro exam, which is both frightening and amazing.  I haven’t had one yet today either.

If you have a moment, send Geoff an email.  He’s home with a vicious head cold and he’s losing his voice.  He can’t come visit me till his fever goes down and he can’t really communicate via phone, so we’re texting and emailing.

I think that’s it for now.  If something interesting happens, other than the constant beeping and groaning of machines, I’ll post it here.
