Looking forward to GoT Season 4 finale, but…

It does make me a little sad that after tonight, we will have to wait such a long time to see anything new.  Season Five won’t start for some 9 or 10 months.  And I imagine that tonight’s episode will drop a few surprises on us, even those of us who have read the books.

Yes, you can be a man and a feminist

Feminism does not exist because women want special treatment or special rights.  It exists because even after nearly a century of suffrage and other societal reforms, women still do not have a truly equal position in our society.  Not an opinion, fact.  There are still a lot of people out there convinced that women should not have any roles in society outside the kitchen or the bedroom: they shouldn’t vote or run for office; that they shouldn’t be in the military or serve in combat; that they shouldn’t get an education; that they shouldn’t be single mothers; they they shouldn’t be able to practice birth control; that they shouldn’t be in the workplace, much less executives or political leaders; and that they should always be subservient to men.

Go ahead, Google any of these ideas and concepts I just listed and see what you find.  See the kinds of people defending these ideas.  Be prepared to turn over a few rocks and see what’s underneath.

I don’t recommend doing it on a full stomach.

Three things that almost made me cry tonight on GoT

Sure, I have read the books.  And sure, as a result I generally know what is coming in terms of the show.  But every once in a while David Benioff and Dan Weiss really throw a curveball in there and it just totally takes me by surprise.  So not only did they surprise me tonight, they hit me with a triple whammy.

A good Dornish meal to honor the Red Viper

I have been wanting to make a Dornish meal for some time, and now that I have had a long weekend home to help Kelly as she recovers from her surgery I have had some time to make it.   So here is my traditional Dornish meal of dates, cheese, olives, chickpea paste, and flatbread.  And wine, of course.

A quick note on wine in ASOIAF/GoT

I have been thinking a lot about what I am going to make for my planned Dornish meal to honor the late Prince Oberyn Martell.  I haven’t tried doing any Dornish stuff yet, and I wanted to try since it all sounds so tasty.  Originally I wanted to do something before the big showdown with the Mountain.  The perfect time has passed,  I know, but I just didn’t have time to do it last weekend with all the server surgery.

The Red Viper also got me thinking about wine.  Especially those magnificent Dornish wines that get mentioned so frequently in the books.

IT redundancy really is your friend

Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I have managed to rebuild our server into a better machine than it was.  But for some reason the hard drive from the old server was giving me fits, trying to move data.  Perhaps it was damaged somehow.  I am not sure.

But I do know this: a backup of the backups saved our data.

Our home server has had some issues

Years ago, I decided to build my own server.  Part of it was wanting to have the experience of building and running my own server, because I had shockingly little server experience of any kind.  Part of it was knowing how such a machine could help me manage the home network I was also building.  So in 2010 our home server came into existence.

And then two weeks ago, it went out of existence.
