Kelly and I were working at a craft fair trying to sell some of her jewelry and the weather was just gorgeous. In the morning it was a bit low so I walked to a little neighborhood market to get a bite to eat for us. While there the nearby railroad crossing started flashing and dinging as a train approached the crossing. So I walked over to take a look.

Surviving the Apocalypse
As anyone who knows me well will tell you, I am somewhat obsessed with emergency preparedness and safety in general. Mind you, not to the point of having a bunker and hoarding gold coins and such, but I do take that sort of thing seriously when it comes to normal Red Cross-type preparation.
Well, this past week I got to hear Annalee Newitz, one of the founders of io9, give a reading from her new book: Scatter, Adapt, and Remember:
How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction. And it was quite illuminating, and a lot of fun to boot. Count on the Harvard Bookstore to always bring in cool authors.
The dual basket idea worked, apparently
When we decided to put a second basket on top of the upright freezer as a cat bed, we had hoped that eventually the cats would be able to use them at the same time. And so they have.
Yesterday, as I was finally finishing up the major kitchen cleaning and reorganization project I mentioned earlier, I put out the jar that holds cat treat and stocked it. That got someone’s attention.
I welcome our new feline overlords
A little while back Shakay sent us a link to this website. The design is fantastic and the fact that this is all designed for cats just thrills me to pieces.
It also terrifies me.
Major kitchen reorganization and cleaning, supervised by Scratch
My big project this week has been the kitchen. I have wanted to do a major cleaning for a while now, and it’s as good a time as any. This also gives me a chance to do some reorganizing since I have a good idea now of what new kitchen items (I mean post-wedding) get used more often than others. So my electric griddle gets put somewhere that makes it easier to use, for example. The clam boil pot, as much as I love it, might get used once or twice a year and so it can go somewhere out of the way.
Anyway, as I was cleaning yesterday Scratch decided he was going to “help” by heading up to his new cat bed, up on the freezer. Now, before I get into this too deeply, some background is required.

The kitteh who wants to be a puppeh
One of the things we always say about my cat Scratch is that since he grew up with a dachshund, and since he spends so much time with the dogs, he wants to be a dog. He has always wanted to go outside with the dogs whenever they go out to do their business. And he tends to curl up with them to nap from time to time, especially when the weather is cold.
Well, it turns out he also likes to burrow into the blankets, just like the dachshunds do. And I managed to snap a few pictures for once.
Dachshund winter activities
I bet you are thinking I am going to talk about dachshunds in the snow and such. Well, you don’t know much about our dachshunds, then. When it’s ridiculously cold outside, like it is now, just getting the dogs out to do their business can be a trial, especially if precipitation is in progress. So most of their winter activities consist of a) trying to stay warm, b) trying to get more food than they are normally allowed, and c) sleeping. Frequently a) and c) are combined.
More things you should be reading right now
Geoff and I have been dealing with a pile of bureaucratic red tape so high that 1) we’re tired and 2) I know now how to spell bureaucratic without looking it up or using spell check. So, in lieu of real content I present you with More things you should be reading right now. All links are, as always, SFW.

Do you like waffles?
I bet you do. Everybody likes waffles. Especially when they look like this.
The Animals of the Internet Speak Their Minds
Some of these have been kicking around on my hard drive for a while and I think it’s time they come out to play. Some of them are just too good to keep to myself.
