There are all sorts of amazing things happening in November this year. I just happen to be involved in one of them each weekend leading up to Thanksgiving. Are you looking to plan your activities and maybe get a jump on some handmade Christmas shopping? Look no further.
I’m lucky to be participating in Roslindale Open Studios this year. This is the 10th year of ROS and they’re a great group to work with. If you want to start your Christmas shopping with some handmade items and also want the chance to look around Roslindale, take a bike tour, and sample some craft food and beverage, the first weekend in November is it!

No, not that season. The one we’re in right now. Autumn.
Somerville is celebrating the final SomerStreets of the year on Sunday October 19th with the Monster Mashed UP Festival. Major streets will be closed, ghosts and goblins will walk among us, and fun will be had by all. Also, there will be pumpkins, face painting, a parade, costume contests (for pets and their people) and, you’ve probably guessed it by now, craft vendors.
I’ll be there in my tent with all sorts of things to tempt you. Things that make great host gifts, things that make gifts for yourself, and yes, things that make great holiday gifts as well.
Details are here. Please come! It’s a rain or shine event. We’re hardy New Englanders after all, and this is only Autumn. Winter is, as they say, still coming.

and that just breaks my heart. And Kelly’s too. We love The Fireplace. It was where we had our rehearsal dinner. It is hands down our favorite restaurant in Boston, and believe me, that says a lot because there are so many good restaurants that we love.
We are going to try to go a few more times before they close. At least they will be here until the end of the year. But we are heartbroken. We are going to miss that place, and we will miss seeing owner, chef and all-around great guy Jim too.
Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria can take over your building, but they can’t fill your shoes.

I have been wanting to make a Dornish meal for some time, and now that I have had a long weekend home to help Kelly as she recovers from her surgery I have had some time to make it. So here is my traditional Dornish meal of dates, cheese, olives, chickpea paste, and flatbread. And wine, of course.

I have been thinking a lot about what I am going to make for my planned Dornish meal to honor the late Prince Oberyn Martell. I haven’t tried doing any Dornish stuff yet, and I wanted to try since it all sounds so tasty. Originally I wanted to do something before the big showdown with the Mountain. The perfect time has passed, I know, but I just didn’t have time to do it last weekend with all the server surgery.
The Red Viper also got me thinking about wine. Especially those magnificent Dornish wines that get mentioned so frequently in the books.
We’ve showed you the books, the jewelry, and the metal-ware. Now it’s time for everything else. It’s amazing how much great stuff we got that was SO inexpensive. It’s also amazing that we’re going to be able to fit it all in 3 posts.
A recording of J. R. R. Tolkien made at a “Hobbit Dinner” in the Netherlands in 1958 is going to be remastered and released later this year.
Wow. Just… wow.
I love the idea of Tolkien himself attending a feast inspired by his own writings. Makes me think of how Sariann and Chelsea did something similar with GRRM when he came to Boston for his book tour. I also love that Tolkien was apparently delighted by the whole thing and really enjoyed himself (as did GRRM). As a huge fan of Tolkien and GRRM and of creating food inspired by fantasy books, I can hardly wait to hear the whole recording.
It also makes me a little sad that I never had the opportunity to meet Tolkien, this warm, brilliant, remarkable man, before he passed away. I was only a toddler when he died. But I am hopeful for the opportunity that perhaps one day I will have the chance to meet George R.R. Martin. Maybe on his book tour for The Winds of Winter.
