My friend Shoyo is a pretty cool guy. He’s an undergraduate student at BU, he’s got a wicked sense of style, and he’s been volunteering at HMNH since he was about 5 years old. He’s also the only thing I can think of that unites the three things listed in the title of this post.

Miracles can happen
With Christmas a week away there is a lot of talk of Santa, wishes, and miracles happening. This time of year can be tough for people who don’t have a lot or who want something special for someone else in their lives. I feel lucky to have witnessed two really interesting and spontaneous acts of miracle making on the internet lately that have helped me to remember that there are truly good strangers out there in the world. That’s the easiest thing to forget during this time of hustle, bustle, insanity, and chaos.
Christmas Card 2014
We’re back at it again this year, we’re saving on postage being environmentally friendly and putting our Christmas Card online. There’s also the time factor. It took me more than 8 hours to wrap the Christmas gifts that are being shipped to 3 places in two other states and being handed out here in MA. Actually mail merging the labels for the over 100 names on our list, labeling, signing and then mailing the cards (maybe not in that exact order) is WAY more time than I have. So, an hour or so of photo editing it is.
And so, I give you, our 2014 Christmas Card.

It’s that time of year again, Meravelha has a concert for you. These hardy souls are, amongst the insanity of December, putting on a concert featuring the music of the Christmas season. Twice. I’ll be at both concerts.

Hello again, everyone. Long time no blog.
I am just now managing to recover from I guess what you might call a flare-up of my old back injury. For a little while, it was pretty bad. But it is getting better. I have been utilizing the collection of canes that Kelly and I got not quite six years ago when I managed, in the space of a few months, to badly injure my right knee and then my back. Probably the worst injuries, at least in terms of recovery time, that I have ever had.
But this current episode makes no sense to me.

So a book came out this week, you may have heard…
I may have mentioned in this space that Amanda Palmer had a book publishing this week. Geoff and I were lucky that we were able to go to the midnight book release party of of her first literary offering, The Art of Asking. The party was on Monday night, the books were sold/picked up at midnight, and fun was had by all. Because Geoff’s back was Behaving Badly, we weren’t able to join everyone in the concert/parade from Harvard Square to Porter Square, but we did get to meet some very cool people while we waited at Porter Square Books and sampled the hot cider.
Oh, and as Geoff mentioned here, he also got his picture taken with Neil Gaiman.

A letter to a friend
Dear Carter,
I suspect you know all of this already. You probably know a lot of things I don’t, but I wanted to take a moment to write you anyway. I’ll tell you straight away, I’ve missed you. When you took ill a few months ago we all assumed that you’d bounce right. You were always amazing with your energy and tenacity despite your age.
But you didn’t get better. You got worse. And on Thursday, you died.

Roslindale Open Studios 11/1 & 11/2
I’m lucky to be participating in Roslindale Open Studios this year. This is the 10th year of ROS and they’re a great group to work with. If you want to start your Christmas shopping with some handmade items and also want the chance to look around Roslindale, take a bike tour, and sample some craft food and beverage, the first weekend in November is it!

Lack of sleep is getting to me
I want to offer an apology to all the people I should be calling, or hanging out with, or otherwise spending time interacting with, because I have not done those things much lately.
