I miss him. I miss my little buddy, and how he used to greet me every day when I come home from work. Thumbelina still does, of course, but it’s not the same as when the pair of them would get each other all worked up and excited over things like that.

Footprints in the snow
I worked a half shift yesterday before I went to rehearsal last night. I wasn’t really in any mood to deal with people but one of my coworkers had called out sick and another was sick and needed to go home. Word had also spread about Rerun’s passing and this particular group of people, who are ordinarily nice to me, were super sweet and supportive. I ended up with a lot of time to work in the quiet places and get some time alone. I really appreciated it.
A gentle reminder that this is New England in winter
Although we are WAY under our usual quota for snow so far this season, winter has decided to let us know that it is still here, and that all those warnings from the Starks were not for nothing.
This morning when I got up, the temperature according to the little weather tool on the kitchen computer was -3 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind chill was somewhere between -20 and -25 degrees, depending on just how hard the wind was blowing. It would be white walker weather, except for the lack of snow.

A new Christmas tradition?
Kelly and I are big Neil Gaiman fans, in case you didn’t know already.
Now we have yet another reason to love the guy. Last year he recorded a wonderful version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: a version in which he reads from Charles Dickens’ own annotated copy, as Charles Dickens, complete with clothes and beard.
Christmas Card 2014
We’re back at it again this year, we’re saving on postage being environmentally friendly and putting our Christmas Card online. There’s also the time factor. It took me more than 8 hours to wrap the Christmas gifts that are being shipped to 3 places in two other states and being handed out here in MA. Actually mail merging the labels for the over 100 names on our list, labeling, signing and then mailing the cards (maybe not in that exact order) is WAY more time than I have. So, an hour or so of photo editing it is.
And so, I give you, our 2014 Christmas Card.
Beautiful spring day today
Kelly and I were working at a craft fair trying to sell some of her jewelry and the weather was just gorgeous. In the morning it was a bit low so I walked to a little neighborhood market to get a bite to eat for us. While there the nearby railroad crossing started flashing and dinging as a train approached the crossing. So I walked over to take a look.
Trying to enjoy life one day at a time
Well, after taking some time to process it, I guess I can go ahead and say (officially) that I am not going to the police academy this year. I just wasn’t high enough on the list, I guess. But the people involved in the process have been highly encouraging and supportive towards me, and so I will make another effort whenever they put together another class, either later this year or early next year.
In the meantime, it has been a humbling experience to get back into the job hunt full-time. And to be honest, a little depressing. But since I am Mr. Silver Lining, I am trying to find the bright side of the experience and move on.
So there’s a few things I am doing to keep myself entertained while I continue the (seemingly eternal) job hunt.
The dual basket idea worked, apparently
When we decided to put a second basket on top of the upright freezer as a cat bed, we had hoped that eventually the cats would be able to use them at the same time. And so they have.
Yesterday, as I was finally finishing up the major kitchen cleaning and reorganization project I mentioned earlier, I put out the jar that holds cat treat and stocked it. That got someone’s attention.

A little while back Shakay sent us a link to this website. The design is fantastic and the fact that this is all designed for cats just thrills me to pieces.
It also terrifies me.
Major kitchen reorganization and cleaning, supervised by Scratch
My big project this week has been the kitchen. I have wanted to do a major cleaning for a while now, and it’s as good a time as any. This also gives me a chance to do some reorganizing since I have a good idea now of what new kitchen items (I mean post-wedding) get used more often than others. So my electric griddle gets put somewhere that makes it easier to use, for example. The clam boil pot, as much as I love it, might get used once or twice a year and so it can go somewhere out of the way.
Anyway, as I was cleaning yesterday Scratch decided he was going to “help” by heading up to his new cat bed, up on the freezer. Now, before I get into this too deeply, some background is required.
